For this couples session at Brainard Lake in Colorado, we leaned completely into the moody mountain atmosphere. The cool air, towering peaks, quiet trails, and soft overcast light created the perfect setting for images that felt romantic, adventurous, and a little bit cinematic.

The goal was to capture the feeling of being there together, surrounded by Colorado’s incredible scenery, while still creating those intentional portraits that feel timeless. Brainard Lake was the perfect backdrop for this session. The mountains felt massive against them, creating that sense of adventure I love so much in couples photography.

I love when a couples session can feel like more than just taking photos. It should feel like an experience you actually get to remember. The cooler tones and dramatic mountain backdrop gave the entire gallery a moodier feel, while the moments between the more intentional portraits kept everything feeling genuine and connected.

The winding paths, rocky landscape, tall trees, and expansive views gave us so many different ways to photograph the two of them. Some images felt quiet and intimate, while others captured more of that adventurous feeling that makes Colorado so special.

With the mountains still towering behind them and the last bit of daylight disappearing, the lantern added this warm little glow against the cool, moody landscape. It felt almost like the final scene of a movie.

There's something so beautiful about photographing couples at the end of the day, when everything gets quieter and the light becomes a little more dramatic. The contrast between the warm lantern and the deep mountain backdrop made for some of my favorite images from the entire session. And honestly, that's one of the reasons I love creating sessions that feel intentional rather than simply showing up, taking a few portraits, and leaving.

The little details are often what make the photographs feel like you.

This Brainard Lake session was such a beautiful reminder of why I love photographing couples in places that feel meaningful and a little adventurous.

Whether we're wandering through the mountains, exploring somewhere new, chasing beautiful light, or ending the evening with a lantern under the stars, my goal is always to create images that feel honest, cinematic, and timeless. Photographs that feel less like a collection of poses and more like a memory you can step back into.
